ISLAMIC DINAR & DIRHAM (Gold and Silver Coins used in Islam)

At the time of the birth of Islam, the currency in used in the Arabian peninsula are two:

1. Gold coin known as Dinar later named Islamic Dinar, and

2. Silver coin known as Dirham and later renamed to Islamic Dirham.

All monetary and cash ruling in Islamic law are based on these two coins available at the early years of Islam. Then with Islam and the Muslims living within Arabian peninsula no problem arises, however after expansion of empires and spreading of Islam and particularly at a point in time these two coins ceased to exist, problem arises. The major problem is how to continue to use Islamic rulings stating Islamic Dinar or Dirham where these coins are lost in the wheels of civilisation. For example in Maliki school of Jurisprudence the minimum amount allowed for dowry is 1/4 of Islamic Dinar, today how can a Nigerian Muslim know the minimum dowry in Nigerian Naira he is supposed for his bride? This problem prompted researches in different Islamic research organisations. SHAMDI International put the tsak of providing a solution to this problem to a delegate in which I happened to be a member. From the finding of this rresearch this page is designed to assist in finding out what is the equivalence of these two coins in US Dollar and thereby its worths can be calculated in local currency.

Islamic Dinar is minted from pure gold and weighes 4.4 grams, measurement taken in 74 A.H Converting this to ounce (1 gram=0.0352739619 ounces) will be 0.1552054 oz. At the time of Caliph Umar bn Al-Khattab(RA) it was found out that 10 Islamic Dirham weigh 7 Islamic Dinar.

Islamic Dirham on the other hand is a coin minted from pure silver and using the finding of Caliph Umar bn Al-Khattab(RA) that stipulated 10 Islamic Dirham weighes 7 Islamic Dinar. this is know as mithqal; we can rightly infere the weight of Islamic Dirham to be 6.285712 grams which is equivalent to 0.221722 oz.

With these two weights, one needs to know the price of one ounce of these commodity to arrive at exchange rate of these ancient coins. For example in New York Stock Exchange market, which is one of the leading commodities markets in the world, today (8/11/2015) an ounce of gold cost US$ 1,091.85. The formula is simple 1 Ounce of Gold=US$ 1,091.65 then 0.1499143 oz of gold (which is the worth of Islamic Dinar) will be US$ 163.653945595. Therefore, One Islamic Dinar on 8/11/2015 is equivalent to US$ 163.653945595.

The Islamic Dinar and Dirham equivalence in US $ are given below and the amount (Nisab) in regard to certain rites and worship in Islam are equally given below:
